Why Superhuman’s Former Head of Growth Decided It Was Time to "Give Away the Legos"
Gaurav Vohra's advice for getting unstuck and navigating a career pivot
Presented by Churnkey
I spent years of my career acquiring, activating, and converting free users into paying customers. But working in a high-volume subscription business, my teams missed a huge opportunity to have more impact, and drive more revenue - by reducing churn.
Churnkey helps subscription companies like Jasper, Veed.io, and Copy.ai drastically reduce both voluntary and involuntary churn. On average, Churnkey saves 20-40% of subscription revenue that would otherwise be lost to churn.
“I am Growth. Who on the planet could possibly understand this team as well as I do?”
This reaction comes from Gaurav Vohra, part of the founding team at Superhuman, where he spent 10 years leading Growth, Product Marketing, and Analytics. Today, he advises founders on scaling their product-led growth efforts.
At Superhuman’s peak, Gaurav was managing a team of 35 people collectively known as Growth.
He excelled at doing the work, hiring top talent, and scaling the team. But as the team grew, his role shifted. The tactical work he loved was replaced by strategic planning, people management, and coaching managers.
He had become a leader of leaders.
A job he didn’t love - and didn’t feel he was excelling at.
Things came to a head when Gaurav received feedback that he wasn’t the right person to lead a team of that size.
The best move for the company, would be to bring in someone else.
Gaurav knew the feedback was fair, but stepping aside was still hard to stomach.
“It was a digging in the heels moment", he shared. “Initially, I was like - back up. This is my team!"
Gaurav’s story resonated with me deeply.
For many of us, the best part of working at a high-growth company is how quickly your role changes and evolves. But when a company thrives, there’s a good chance it might take you so far from the work you love, that the job stops being fun.
That’s exactly what happened to Gaurav.
He eventually transitioned those teams, but it wasn’t easy. It triggered self-doubt - and a re-evaluation of his career path.
In our conversation, Gaurav shares how he navigated the identity crisis that followed and rebuilt his confidence by aligning his work with his strengths.
We also cover:
