I couldn’t help but think, ‘Is this because I’m a woman? Then I was like, should I talk to a lawyer?!”
That’s what went through Meredith Rosenbloom’s mind.
Today she is the VP of Growth Marketing at Zola. But this story comes from her time at Grubhub (where she worked for over 5 years).
She was a Senior Manager on the GrubHub Marketing team and had been asked to switch teams and take over another role. One that was held previously by a male Director.
But when she got the formal offer, she saw it was for a Senior Manager instead of the Director title. A lateral move - not the promotion it should have been 🤔.
“At the time, I was so upset” Meredith shared.
“I thought to myself, I am not getting the title of a director because I'm a female, and this male had the role as a director level, but I'm not seen as the same level as him. And it really felt like a sexist thing at the time.”
In our candid conversation, Meredith opened up about how this moment impacted her confidence.
“I believe that everybody needs to stand up for themselves. And I made it very clear this situation didn’t meet my expectations - and I still think that’s the right thing to do”
She almost walked away from GrubHub.
But instead, she stood her ground, trusted her manager when they said they believed in her (they advocated for her title change but were handcuffed by company politics), and eventually earned the Director title bump six months later.
Here’s the advice she shared for navigating a career speed bump like this:
Advocate for yourself: Be professional but direct. Make your expectations clear.
Find allies: A supportive manager or mentor can make tough situations more manageable - and help you gain perspective.
Play the long game: Sometimes, it’s worth sticking it out if you see a clear path forward.
But that’s not all we talked about. We also dove into:
The challenge of returning to work after maternity leave when everything about her role had shifted.
How she transformed harsh feedback about her communication style into an opportunity to grow.
Her favorite rituals for staying grounded, including breath work, meditation, and cold plunges.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, slighted, or unsure how to move forward, you’ll love this episode. It’s packed with relatable insights and practical advice.
